Croatian football president says he's sorry we realize he's a homophobe

From a statement on the Croatian Football Federation's website (via Google Translation):

"I'm sorry that my words were somehow misunderstood by the public, I'm sorry for clumsy interpretation. It certainly was not my intention to offend and hurt anyone."

A reminder of what he said in his interview:

"While I'm president of the Croatian Football Federation, there will be no homosexuals playing in the national team", Vlatko Markovic said in an interview with Croatian national daily Vecernji List.

Asked whether in his career he has met a homosexual footballer, he eplied:

"Luckily, only normal people play football".

For an apology to begin to undo the harm caused, we need action not words, and words that are those of an apology, not weasel words.
