Campus Progress reports on Athlete Ally and new NCAA policies

It’s been more than 35 years since David Kopay, former NFL running back, came out as openly gay. He was the first athlete in this country’s three major sports (football, basketball, and baseball) to do so. But openly gay or transgender athletes are still exceedingly rare in modern professional sports.

Now a recent initiative aims to make the world of sports friendlier to LGBTQ athletes by giving support to K-12 schools to create an environment of acceptance and respect. Hudson Taylor, a college wrestling coach at Columbia, has launched Athlete Ally, a social media campaign to motivate those in the sports world to accept and welcome LGBTQ athletes. As of this writing, over 1,200 people have already signed the pledge he's created at the newly launched website.
