30 May 2012 / IGLA 2012 will be the largest international LGBT in Iceland, ever

IGLA Championships
Iceland’s largest gathering of international LGBT, ever.

The first weekend in June sees the biggest international LGBT event ever organized in Iceland! The IGLA Championship is hosted by queer sports club Styrmir in co-operation with the Icelandic Swimming Association, the City of Reykjavík, the Icelandic Ministry of Culture and Sports, and queer travel experts Pink Iceland.

The 2012 championships of FGG member organization International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics will be held from 30 May 30 to 2 June. Up to 800 participants are scheduled to arrive from all over the world to compete in swimming, water polo, synchronized swimming and diving. Organizers expect the event to be the largest international aquatics competition ever held in the country.

The Championship is sponsored by both the City of Reykjavík and the Ministry of Culture and Sports. The mayor of Reykjavík is scheduled to make an appearance, and if his past behaviour is anything to go by it is likely he’ll show up in drag to show his support.

Business Traveller Magazine voted Reykjavik on of its top five ‘Cities To Swim In’ in 2009 due to the unique culture and attitude to the sport. Iceland is a volcanic island and geothermal water is both plentiful and cheap. Pretty much every town in the country has its own geothermally heated outdoor pool open to the public all year round.

Swimming in Iceland is more than a sport, its a way of life.
