10 July 2012 /. Olympic torchbearers: Lorna McArdle TODAY

Lorna McArdle of Reading, age 43
Carrying the Flame through Reading
Carrying the Flame on 10 July 2012

Lorna's nomination story

Before coming out as LGBT I was in a local marching band called Cadence Drum and Bugle Corp for 25 years of which I was a member and went on to become a director of the charity for a couple of years. The band would travel around the country entering competitions. We would teach music, dance and discipline, the marching band was based on the American high school model. During my time as a teacher we reached British champions in 1999. The age group was 7-25 years old. I helped set up and direct the cadets age group for 7-13 year old.
After 25 years I moved on to pursue other interests and that's when I took on Reading Pride as a webmaster. I have been chairwoman for 6 years, the team at Reading Pride have grown the attendance from 2.5k to 14k in that time. Helping to bring a new diversity and acceptance of sexuality within the community of Reading. Sexuality is still very much a hidden issue with a lot of people and Reading Pride encourages inclusion not exclusion of all diversity. This applies to Sexual Orientation, Gender, Race, Disability, Women and Religion. CR
