Preview competition for Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010

A golf tournament is to be held in Cologne to raise awareness of the Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010. On April 19, 2008, dozens of golfers will face off against one another while promoting greater acceptance of homosexual, bisexual, transgender and transsexual people.

For an entire day in April, the organizers of the Cologne Gay Games will be holding plenty of interesting activities for active golf players and fans called "Golf Cologne – Be part of it!" Newcomers to the sport will have the opportunity to participate in a four-hour starter workshop with a golf professional, where they can discover how fascinating the game of golf can be. Clubs and balls will be provided.

Final Four about hoops, not gays

A writer for the Orlando Sentinel would like to see the newspapers stop reporting about the marketing towards the growing lesbian tourism that follows the final four, and stick to reporting about the sport only. Take a look at this article by Shannon J. Owens "From the Press Box". She also seems to think lesbians should be handled by the local sports people and stay away from the NCAA.

It is an odd disturbing sports report. A link to the article has been sent to GLAAD.

Beantown Softball had 17 teams in the 2007 season. They are reporting 21 teams for the 2008 season and are holding clinics to welcome more new players.

Atlanta Softball and Flag Football Season Starts

Lesbian and gay softball and flag football teams started their season this weekend in Atlanta, GA. The Hotlanta Softball League had 3 teams win the Gay Softball World Series in 2007 and plan to defend their position in 2008, where the series will be held in Seattle, WA in the dry season of Seattle in August. Over 4500 men and women are expected to arrive in Seattle to play or watch the Gay Softball World Series.

Ambassdor Hormel speaks out for Human Rights

James Hormel, the first openly gay U.S. ambassador spoke at a a March 18 news conference at the National Press Club. He said, “I believe our country needs to work to eliminate such abuses abroad and at home. We need to renew and reinvigorate our worldwide commitment to human rights, and that includes recognizing LGBT rights as human rights.”

Ambassador Hormel is also a Gay Games Ambassador and generous supporter of the Gay Games. Read more on the Gay Games web site under Ambassadors.

Atlanta has a creative web blog that keeps the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community on top of sports events. ANNUAL MEETING OF THE FEDERATION OF GAY GAMES

Federation renews ties to African LGBT sport and culture community; October annual meeting will be the Federation’s first in the southern hemisphere since Johannesburg in October, 2001.

(San Francisco – March 17, 2008) The international Federation of Gay Games announces that Cape Town, South Africa has been selected to host the Federation’s 2008 annual meeting over excellent bids from two U.S. cities, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Palm Springs, California. Traditionally held in the fourth quarter, this year’s meeting dates are October 21-25.

Memorial in SF for Debra Kent

Bay Area Reporter
A memorial will be held March 30 in San Francisco for Debra Kent. She died of ovarian cancer last December 21. She was living in Durham, North Carolina. Ms. Kent worked for the Federation of Gay Games in strategic planning.

HIV Travel Ban in the USA May Be Removed

The US government is working on ending a 20 year ban on immigration and travel to the US by most people. This ban is to be lifted, by a bill working through the US congress. The ban which is discrimination and was introduced by anti-gay Senator Jesse Helms of South Carolina.

Gay Games held in the US in New York-1994 and Chicago-2006 successfully applied for waivers for Gay Games participants. This change in law is a welcome step forward. President Bush is expected to sign the bill if it makes it through the US congress.

k.d. lange talks about Sydney Gay Games VI

k.d. lange gives a shout out about Gay Games VI Sydney 2002 with her article in Planet Out magazine online. She has a new album out and talks travel. Gay Games VI was her mention about culture and new connections in her travels.

"I did the Australian Gay Games. I sang at the opening ceremony. It was really overwhelmingly beautiful to see representatives from China and Iraq and Afghanistan walk through that door at a time of turmoil. It was right when the Bush administration was going haywire. It was really an amazing thing to see people come through that door that were supposed to be our arch-enemies, and yet the gay culture was the thing that trumped any political platform. "

Northern Ireland Sports Minister needs education about Gay Sports

The Northern Ireland government’s sports minister, Edwin Poots, said Feb. 19 that he doesn’t understand why gays need their own sports teams.

Poots was quoted “I just cannot fathom why people see the necessity to develop an apartheid in sport. “It would be unacceptable to produce an all-black rugby team or an all-white team or an all-Chinese team. To me, it’s equally unacceptable to produce an all-homosexual rugby team, and I find it remarkable that people who talk so much about inclusivity and about having an equal role in society would then go down the route of exclusion.”

He was commenting about a local gay rugby team. He seemed to be unaware that gay and lesbian teams welcome heterosexual players and many teams have heterosexual players on their teams. We need to get this message out to educate our elected officials and public.

Gay Games Amabassador John Amaechi to receive honor from The Matthew Shepard Foundation

Judy Shepard will unveil the new campaign during the 7th Annual Bear to Make a Difference Gala, which will take place on Saturday, March 29th in Denver, Colorado.

The Matthew Shepard Foundation announced today that it plans to engage the general public in the mission to "Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion and Acceptance."

Each year, the Foundation honours outstanding individuals or organizations with the coveted "Making a Difference Award."

This year's honoree is John Amaechi, former NBA player and youth advocate.

Many of you met Jack on Project Runway this season on Bravo. Many more Gay Games swimmers already knew Jack many years and from many Gay Games cities. He not only looks like a model, but he is a model athlete.

A great blog interview with Jack Mackenroth on POZIAM BLOG. Jack discusses his life and attending Gay Games since Gay Games III Vancouver BC. Jack says attending Gay Games III as "one of the greatest experiences of my life." Jack has competed in every Gay Games since. His team set national masters records at Gay Games VII in Chicago 2006.
