UK LGBT sailing club shortlisted for national award

News from the Pink Paper about a member organization of FGG-member Gay and Lesbian Organisation for Racing and Yachting (note that our friends at Pride Sports tell us that there are other LGBT sailing clubs in the UK, including two in Greater Manchester):

The Sailing and Cruising Association, the UK’s only gay and lesbian sailing club, has been shortlisted for The Royal Yachting Association Club of the Year 2011 award.

The RYA, which is the national body for all forms of boating within the UK, has recognised the Sailing & Cruising Association for its commitment to engage with the gay community and encourage people to get on the water.

The club which promotes sailing, motor cruising, dinghy sailing and training courses has also been commended for its range of quality and safe water-based activities, attracting new club members and volunteers together with demonstrating good governance and club management.

The RYA sees the support and future development of clubs, such as the Sailing & Cruising Association, as essential to the continuing popularity of all forms of boating and as key deliverers of quality training, safe racing and access to the water.

Commenting on the news, Reggie Blennerhassett, Club Commodore said: “This is the very best start to the new year we could have wished for. 2010, our 30th anniversary year, saw many highs, including multiple medals at the International Gay Games, winning silver in the 2010 Inshore Jog Series and record membership numbers. Now, 2011, with news of the RYA awards shortlist, is already proving to be another exciting year for the club”.

The announcement of the overall winner will take place at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show, taking place at Alexandra Palace, London from 5 – 6 March.
