Our occasional round-up of stories on homophobia and coming out in pro sports.
We heard about David Tyree (see Wide Rights blog) claim that gay marriage would lead to "anarchy". It turns out that gay marriage has no effect on society, other than to make it more fair. Losing a hockey match, on the other hand, causes mayhem (at least in Vancouver), as described by Kevin Marshall:
Detractors of same-sex marriage often cite a degradation of society if same-sex marriage is legalized. It saddens me that people can’t get over environmentally taught prejudices to see past such a ludicrous notion, especially when society needs nothing less than a game played by grown men on ice skates – one whose result will be rendered moot in the Fall when a new season begins and all records, numbers, and accomplishments are reset to zero – to completely fall apart.
I kid, of course, but only to show a point: of all the things that could go wrong in this world and all the things we should be afraid of, the last of them should be love, no matter what form it takes.
This doesn't seem to be worth getting worked up about, but I guess it's good that a questionable use of words can become a teachable moment:
A commentator for the Washington Nationals baseball team apologized on Wednesday for using the word “sissy” during a June 5 televised broadcast of a Nationals game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.
In an interview with the Washington Blade, Ray Knight, a former Major League Baseball player who serves as a commentator accompanying the Nationals’ regular announcer, said he meant no harm to anyone when he used the word. He said he didn’t realize it is sometimes used as a derogatory code word for gay men.
“I never thought one time that that would be a word that would be used to connote that,” he said, adding that he meant it as an expression calling for a baseball player to “come on, toughen up.”
“But absolutely, I get it,” he said. “Now I get it.”
Sean Avery is putting his shoe leather where his mouth is, lobbying New York State Senators for marriage equality. You can see him here with actress Cynthia Nixon (h/t Outsports):
