An extract from an in-depth interview with Caroline Symons, winner of the 2009 Federation of Gay Games Legacy Award for Academic Scholarship and Research:
Highly respected researcher and anti-homophobia campaigner, Dr Caroline Symons, from Victoria University’s School of Sport and Exercise Science, explained to SX that while some mainstream sports organisations are implementing inclusive sexuality and gender practices, campaigners are up against over 200 years of entrenched thinking.
“Sport is probably one of the most binary type activities; male and female – female in particular has to be defined in reasonably strict terms.
“Because sport was founded and created in the 1800s to turn boys into men and to reinforce a sort of hegemonic masculinity and it’s continued to do that. The most celebrated varieties of sport certainly still do, like the football codes, and baseball and ice hockey,” Symons says.
