Panteres Grogues board member elected to board of Catalan Tennis Federation

A message from FGG member organization Panteres Grogues:

For the first time, the Federació Catalana de Tenis (FCT or Catalan Tennis Federation) will have on its board an out gay man, Manel Gines, a board member of FGG member organization Panteres Grogues in Barcelona. Manel is the treasurer of Panteres Grogues, and the coordinator of tennis within the multisport club.

He joins the board of FCT as part of a slate of candidates led by Joan Navarro, a childhood friend of Manel.

Their victory is a big shake-up for the federation, after a difficult election against outgoing president Francesc Orriols. The new team won by 110 to 104 in a run-off vote after a tied first round of voting.

A concrete hope for Panteres Grogues is for more favorable terms for renting tennis venues for their annual PantereSports multisport tournament, which will next be organized in September 2012. More important is the new possibility for developing projects within the FCT to fight homophobia in sport. The new team in place will be a much more interesting partner for such actions.

Sport in Spain is highly decentralized, and the autonomous region of Catalonia has full responsibility for sport. All sports clubs in the region are member of the Catalan federation for their sport, with some also being members of the Spanish national federation.

The FGG sends its best wishes to Manel in his new duties, with our hopes for a fruitful exchange between LGBT and mainstream sports bodies.

News from ADI:

Panteres Grogues participate in inauguration of new Barcelona monument to LGBT persecution

The Mayor of Barcelona recently inaugurated a monument in the Parc de la Ciudatella that recalls gays, lesbians, and transsexuals who have suffered from persecutions and retaliation for their condition throughout history.

The Mayor pointed out that this monument – an inverted pink triangle, made of stone from the mountain of Montjuïc – was the symbol used by Nazis in extermination camps to mark homosexuals, and it has become a message of "Memory and Commitment".
Over two hundred people gathered to celebrate the placement of the monument., which opened and closed with songs by the Barcelona Rainbow Singers, the choir of FGG member Panteres Grogues.

EGLSF meeting opens with presentation of members' best practices

The Annual General Assembly of the European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation officially opened last night, with the civic reception at historic Villa Bonn. But a majority of delegates were already at work all day at a series of presentations by member clubs of areas in which they have developed special expertise, whether the promotion of sport among LGBT youth, outreach programs, tournament organization, or women's participation. The latter session was proposed by FGG- and EGLSF-member Panteres Grogues from Barcelona.

One of the actions that Ana Valencia presented, designed to promote women's participation in sport is Donasports which is taking place just two weeks from now. This will be the second edition of the weekend of sports by women, for women, to engage women in sport, in the sections of the club, and in the leadership of the organization. Last year's inaugural event resulted in an increase in women's registration of as much as 10%, a great achievement in difficult economic times.
