Warum sind die »Team München Streetboys« hier in Budapest?
Rainer Schweyer: Die diesjährigen EuroGames finden ja zum ersten Mal in einem osteuropäischen Land statt. Gerade in Ungarn, wo gleichgeschlechtliche Lebensformen von der Regierung nicht unterstützt werden, ist es wichtig, uns solidarisch zu zeigen.


Wie habt ihr die Hetze der rechten politischen Parteien gegen die Spiele aufgenommen?
Diese Äußerungen waren für uns eine Zusatzmotivation, hierher zu kommen. Wir haben den Zuschlag für Budapest von Beginn an unterstützt und mitverfolgt, insofern sind wir von der Haltung der Stadt nicht überrascht.

An appeal for EuroGames 2012

We are happy to pass on this appeal from the hosts of EuroGames 2012, and note that this event received no public funding from the city of Budapest or the national government. On the contrary, the climate of homophobia encouraged by the government resulted in added costs for security to ensure the safety of all participants. The FGG is of course itself in need of funds, in particular for Gay Games scholarships (donate HERE), but we encourage those who can manage to give to consider a donation to the host committee to help them break even and continue the work they achieved last month, and, we hope, bring many Hungarians to Cleveland+Akron for Gay Games 9 two years from now.

Dear Friends of the EuroGames 2012 Budapest,

First of all we would like to thank all of you who came to Budapest to join these great games and make history with us! We also would like to thank all our supporters, who might not have been able to join us in Budapest, but helped us with preparing the event. It was such a great experience for all of us who organized it, but wouldn't have come into existence without you! So thank you again for coming and enjoying every minute of it with us!

We are all very proud, that the EuroGames could happen in a safe environment with the police and the security team helping our work. We are also very proud, that we could reach out to many Eastern European athletes and we could host many athetes and volunteers from Poland, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Montenegro etc.

We are very happy, that so many of you joined us for the EuroGames. Unfortunately the number of participants was not as high as we had expected, and what our budget was planned for. In order to reach a zero balance, we still lack about. 25,000 euros. If you or any of your friends can afford to offer a donation, the EuroGames in Budapest could reduce its financial loss. LGBT sport changes lives: Daniel from Budapest

We're sharing this message posted on our Facebook wall by Jan Froelich, secretary general of the EGLSF:

This young co-organiser of EuroGames2012 surprised the audience of the VIP reception in Budapest with a speech that left many of us without words:

"Organizing this event has changed a lot in my life. Before, I was only able to speak about my homosexuality with my mother. With my involvement in EuroGames2012 I felt the need to be open with all of my family members. My parents came yesterday to visit me at the EuroGames village and told me that they were proud of me and I told them that I was proud of them. Even my grandfather got involved: he used to be a board member of the Hungarian Football Federation and later today he will be awarding the medals to the winners of the football competition of EuroGames2012."

Daniel's tears infected the audience. There were tears in the eyes of almost all the guests at the reception. Thank you Dani for this touching moment which was a highlight of EuroGames2012 for many of us!

A message of congratulations to EGLSF and FriGo on 2012 EuroGames in Budapest

Dear members of the board of the European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation and Eurogames 2012,

On behalf of the FGG Board of Directors and Assembly, we congratulate you on the occasion of the Budapest EuroGames.

We recognise your courage and determination in the face of many challenges, and we applaud your success in organising the 2012 Eurogames in Budapest, which involved great personal commitment from EGLSF and the local Budapest organising team. Our thanks go also to Klaus Heusslein, Gabor Laszlo and the FriGo team.

The Budapest EuroGames are a reminder of the progress made by the LGBT sport movement, and of the distance that remains to reach true equality. We continue to believe that equality for LGBT people is best achieved by unity and solidarity.

We hope to see you at the FGG AGA in Sofia from 19-21 August (gaymes.info/sofia212). Representatives from the 2014 Cleveland Gay Games will be attending to answer all your questions.

We also would like to reiterate our invitation for dialogue and collaboration on how best to work together for a single worldwide quadrennial event.

As you compete and play together in Budapest during the next few days, we wish you safe and fun Games and renewed energy for the many challenges we continue to face.

The European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation, in occasion of EuroGames 2012 in Budapest, is glad to invite you to the conference

HOMOPHOBIA IN THE STADIUM European institutions against discrimination in sports

which will take place Saturday, 30th June, at the EuroGames Village (see address below).

Different approaches from (inter)national regional and local governing bodies on tackling homophobia in sports throughout Europe. Which ones are successful, why are they successful? Can they be cuopied to other nations?
Some experts and representatives from European institutions will speak on how to fight against discriminations when doing sport, as well as showing practices already taken in order to tackle homophobia. And all of this, under the umbrella of the first EuroGames ever held in Central and Eastern Europe and in cooperation with the Football for Equality II project, focused on this area and partially funded by the European Commission (DG Justice) under the Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Programme.

Since the event will be part of the EuroGames which will host several thousand guests from all over Europe, the conference will highlight the importance of the contribution made by the European LGBT community to the business community as well as to the sports.

Due to the diversity of participants we expect the conference to add great value to the exchange of ideas and best practices from different parts of the world, innovative ideas and schemes that can be implemented in Hungary and other EU countries as well.

We would also like to share our local experience of the past three years, challenges as well as successes, in working with corporate, SMEs as well as civil organisations.

Dear friends,

After having spent another weekend in Budapest I feel the need to address you in order to share my impressions:

I met an extremely motivated, young, and gender-balanced organization team. I saw a charming city of artists, intellectuals, and felt a liberal atmosphere. I spent a full day walking around the city with a t-shirt stating that I belong to a "lesbian & gay" association. According to press reports, I should be dead by now, but in reality nobody cared.

Whatever happens, in two months our community will write history by celebrating EuroGames for the the first time in an Eastern European country. So far, around 2.000 athletes have registered. My biggest worry is, that some of us will miss the chance to be part of it. I call all of you who haven't register yet:  think again! Don't leave our young friends from Budapest alone! Be part of a historic moment! Register for EuroGames 2012! You won't regret it.

24 June 2012 / European Youth Sport session on sport and homophobia at Eurogames 2012

News about the opportunity to participate in an exciting event held in Budapest in association with Eurogames:

Context of the study session

Aim
To explore sport as both a player in perpetuated homophobia and an opportunity to play together and encourage youth to step away from this current dichotomy through a campaign or tool.

Background
ENGSO Youth has noted a wide intolerance and discomfort surrounding the topic of homophobia through the past trainings and experience within the sport movement.
Research confirms 48% of the EU´s population (Eurobarometer 263 “Discrimination in the European Union”) believes that homosexuality is still a taboo and as stated in the Norwegian NOC´s Sport Policy Document 2007-2011 homophobia is an extremely difficult topic to tackle: “lesbians, gays and bisexuals are – differing from many other minorities – an invisible group. And that is therefore an extra challenge to contribute to dissemination of knowledge and information in order for this group to be fully accepted within sports.”

ENGSO Youth believes there is a strong need to address this alienation within youth sport with a vision of a wider impact. Through this session ENGSO Youth together with 35 other young people aims to tackle discrimination and foster a truly inclusive European youth sector. As one of the main problems to inclusion is often perception, ENGSO Youth would like to engage young people not only to challenge this discrimination within the participants, but use their combined knowledge from the study session to launch a youth campaign targeting sport organisations, clubs, youth workers, or any other target group that the participants deem important.

The Study session is taking place in Budapest parallel to the Eurogames (the Annual European Gay & Lesbian Championships) which offer the perfect opportunity to put into practice the planned campaign.

The objectives of the study session are
To explore the concept of social inclusion, challenge its limitations in terms of access and promote sport as a tool for social change
To share practices on inclusion of homophobia in and through sport
To promote a new, fun, creative approach to youth, sports and homophobia
To create and develop a visual impacting awareness-raising campaign challenging homophobia in sport

Number and Profile of participants:

ENGSO Youth will welcome a total of 35 young participants who are:

• leaders active in the youth sector and the sport sector
• marginalized because of gender based and sexual discrimination
• interested in using sport for social inclusion, especially the inclusion of young marginalized people
• interested in the European context of social inclusion through sports
• leaders working with or interested to work with young people who are facing discrimination based on sexual orientation involved in voluntary work at a local, regional and/or national level;
• interested in raising awareness and challenging the current homophobic environment present in sport
• interested in developing a campaign for sport as social change
• interested in developing creative methods of inclusion through and with sports

ENGSO Youth wishes to receive applications from both female and male applicants, with different cultural and educational backgrounds from 18 to 35 years old. The European Youth Centre Budapest is accessible for wheelchair-users and three bedrooms are adapted. All the applicants are expected to be able to communicate in English during the study session.

Participation fee and travel costs:
There will be an enrolment fee for the participants of 50 € (that will be deducted from your travel reimbursement). The Department of Youth of the Council of Europe covers the costs of accommodation and travelling. The cheapest public transport is to be used. Travel costs will be reimbursed at the study session on the basis of the least expensive route between the place of residence and Budapest. In order to receive travel reimbursement, all receipts and boarding passes must be handed in.

Application:
Applicants need to fill in the application form online and answer the questions. In order to be as cost efficient as possible, we urge participants to send their applications as soon as possible, by the very latest until Tuesday, 1st of May 2012.

About the organiser, ENGSO Youth

ENGSO Youth is the youth organisation of ENGSO (European Non-Governmental Sport Organisation) with 40 national umbrella organisations of sport as members from across Europe.

ENGSO Youth’s underlying values and principles:
Education through sport: Physical Activity is not just a public health issue, it benefits society by increasing social interaction and community engagement and offers numerous possibilities for non-formal education and inclusion.
Co-determination, democratic participation and inclusion: Young Europeans can be unique agents of social change; they should be involved on all levels of the European social environment.
Equal access to health and well-being for all young Europeans regardless of their economic and social status.

ENGSO Youth has for mission to:
Provide support, advice and guidance for members who want to establish their own youth structure.

Eurogames 2012 adds new sports

A message from our friends in Budapest:

Dear Friends,

as you might have come across the information, an important stage of imroving our registration system was completed on 28th February. Now you can re-enter the system and change your registration details and data.

In addition, from now on there is a possibility to register for 4 new sports: petanque, running, table tennis and bridge as well. We have also developed the registration system of the „old” sports, so please enter your account and check if you need to modify some details!

We would also like to ask you to pay your registration fee as soon as possible! The current fee for EGLSF members is 85 Euros, for non-EGLSF members 100 Euros.

En français / "10 bonnes raisons d'aller à Budapest pour les Eurogames cet été"

Christelle Foucault, présidente de la FSGL, est de retour de l'AG de l'EGLSF, où elle a été impressionnée par l'équipe des Eurogames 2012 qui auront lieu cet été à Budapest. Voici son appel à y participer, paru dans Yagg.com :

La Hongrie fait beaucoup parler d'elle depuis la mise en place de sa nouvelle constitution en début d'année par son Premier ministre, Viktor Orban, annonçant un retour en arrière certain pour la démocratie.

La communauté LGBTQI est directement concernée par ce changement de régime: les médias y sont désormais contrôlés, le mariage entre personnes de même sexe semble exclu du champ des possibles et le droit à l'avortement remis en question, pour ne parler que des faits marquants pour les libertés individuelles. Doit-on rappeler également que la gay pride y a été interdite l'an dernier, la préfecture de police de Budapest ayant retiré son autorisation, invoquant des «perturbations excessives pour la circulation» dans la capitale hongroise?

C'est donc dans ce climat que se dessinent les prochains Eurogames , qui auront lieu du 27 juin au 1er juillet à Budapest.

Pour ceux qui s'interrogent encore sur leur éventuelle participation à ce tournoi multisport que sont les Eurogames, voilà quelques raisons d'y prendre part:

1. Parce que Budapest est une des plus belles villes d'Europe et la Perle du Danube. Architecture, culture, musique, les richesses de Budapest sont nombreuses. Cette destination est une incontournable des escapades romantiques. Voilà donc une bonne occasion de la découvrir.
2. Parce que la période du 27 juin au 1er juillet en fera de fait la destination gay & lesbienne en Europe puisque plus de 3000 participants 2000 accompagnateurs et 4000 visiteurs sont attendus.
3. Que vous fassiez du sport ou pas, le programme des conférences et festivités aura de quoi vous régaler: 5 conférences sont organisées pendant les 4 jours de compétition, 50 événements culturels tels qu'une visite guidée de Budapest, un concert de musique classique, le gala de danse de salon pour les couples de même sexe, etc.
4. 16 sports sont au programme donc quel que soit votre niveau, cela peut être une bonne occasion de pimenter votre séjour d'un peu de compétition. À noter, Budapest est candidate à l'organisation des Jeux olympiques d'été en 2020. C'est donc un peu leur round d'essai…
5. 350 volontaires seront mobilisés pour faire de votre séjour un agréable moment. Et malgré leur quotidien, leurs difficultés à être “out” dans leur pays, ils vont pendant 4 jours se mettre à votre service et tenter de tisser des liens avec la communauté et se montrer à leurs concitoyens tels qu'ils sont, tels que nous sommes: sains et équilibrés et ouverts.
