Honorary Life Members to be named at FGG Annual Meeting: Erich Richter

Among the four new Honorary Life Members of the Federation of Gay Games is Erich Richter (San Francisco), served on the FGG Board of Directors as Delegate from Wrestlers Without Borders. For several years he managed FGG technology, creating many of the tools (website, mailing lists, electronic voting software, etc.) that the Federation continues to use, including its current award-winning website. As the FGG prepares to expand its technological tools, it has become even more aware of the formidable contributions of Erich.

BOX magazine supports Gay Games VIII

BOX magazine is supporting the Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010 and will present the sport of “Wrestling”. With this the Cologne Gay Games are further expanding their number of media partnerships and can access up to a total of 61,000 Euros of advertising in BOX.

BOX was founded 16 years ago and has since been supporting numerous gay/lesbian events. “This commitment to the Cologne Gay Games is our greatest contribution to date. We are especially delighted that we as a national men’s magazine will be a strong supporter for the organization”, so BOX President Michael Zgonjanin.

Effective immediately, BOX will bear the official title „National Sponsor of the Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010” and presents the sport of wrestling.” We’re planning numerous mutual campaigns with BOX and are sure to have found a competent partner in the Cologne magazine “, so an excited CEO of the Cologne Gay Games, Annette Wachter.

About the VIII Gay Games Cologne 2010:
The next Gay Games will talke place in Cologne between 31 July and 7 August 2010. Expected are approximately 12,000 participants from over 70 nations, who will celebrate ‚the festival of open games’ under the motto ‚Be part of it!’ – free from any discrimination. The Gay Games support more tolerance towards homosexuals, bisexuals, transgender and transsexuals. Everybody can participate in the Gay Games – independant of sexual orientation, sex, race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political creed, athletic and/ or physical abilities, age or state of health. The participants will show how easy it is to work out and to enjoy culture together.

The VIII Gay Games Cologne 2010 will offer 34 different sports and five cultural events. The bandwidth of the competitions ranges from soccer via beach volleyball to pool, chess, figure skating and dance. The cultural events consist of a choir-, band- and cheerleading festival as well as an art exhibition and an ‚International Memorial Rainbow Run’ to commemorate all AIDS patients and victims.

Honorary Life Members to be named at FGG Annual Meeting: Shawn Kelly

Among the four new Honorary Life Members of the Federation of Gay Games is Shawn Kelly (San Francisco), whose involvement in the Gay Games movement predates the creation of the FGG. Shawn served as Executive Director of FGG precursor San Francisco Arts and Athletics and of Gay Games II. He was the public spokesman for the Gay Games during the federal court fight over the use of the word “Olympic.” He ensured the transition to the FGG, and supported the first Gay Games outside of San Francisco, working diligently with the hosts of Gay Games III in Vancouver to ensure the success of those Games.

Gay Games VIII registrations top 1,700

Cologne, Germany – The organizers of the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne, Germany, announced today that more than 1,700 athletes and artists have now registered to participate in the quadrennial sports and cultural event next July and August. Participants from more than 30 nations have already signed up including many from Eastern European countries where many who are openly gay or lesbian are still persecuted. Participation by the host country Germany leads all other nations with registrations from the United States and The Netherlands following close behind.

“Registrations have increased substantially in the last few months,” said Annette Wachter, CEO of Games Cologne. “Summer LGBT sports programs in North America and Europe have helped drive registrations from the USA, Canada and Europe. The approach of the southern hemisphere’s summer has also increased registrations from Australia and South Africa. We are on target to have participation levels of 8,000 to 10,000 next July and August in Cologne.” Two sports – golf and sailing – are nearing capacity. There are 34 sports and 4 cultural events being offered at the event.

“Now is the time to register for the 2010 Gay Games,” urged Kurt Dahl (Chicago) and Emy Ritt (Paris), co-presidents of the Federation of Gay Games (FGG). “Early registration secures a participant’s spot in a sport or cultural event that may otherwise sell out, and allows Cologne to better plan for next summer’s eighth Gay Games.” FGG delegates from around the world will get a chance to review Cologne’s preparations as they head to the German host city 26 September to 2 October 2009, for its Annual meeting.

Gay Games VIII runs from 31 July to 7 August 2010, and will open with an inspiring Opening Ceremony at RheinEnergie Stadium, the city’s football (soccer) stadium. Up to 48,000 people are expected at the Opening Ceremony according to Andrea Müller, head of the Games Cologne Ceremony & Culture Task Force. Entertainment has not yet been announced but past Gay Games performers have included Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Kylie Minogue, Erasure’s Andy Bell and Heather Small.

Among the four new Honorary Life Members of the Federation of Gay Games is Roger Brigham (San Francisco), who served on the board from 2003-2007, most of that time as Officer for Communications. Roger has served on a great number of FGG committees, and has made signal contributions in each of them, including the launch of the Participate! newsletter and the revised Gay Games sports programme. Roger continues to contribute as delegate from FGG member organisation Wrestlers Without Borders.

The Gay Games are the biggest sports and cultural festival in the world. Built upon the principles of Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best, for more than 25 years the Gay Games have empowered tens of thousands of LGBT artists and athletes through fellowship and friendly competition. The first Gay Games took place in 1982 in San Francisco. They have been held every four years since in world-class cities.
In 2010, the VIII Gay Games will take place in Cologne, Germany from July 31 to August 7. Some 12,000 participants from more than 70 countries are expected for a huge celebration of sports and culture as well as many more volunteers, spectators and friends.

The motto is “Be part of it!” And the invitation is open to everyone – regardless whether you are heterosexual or homosexual, male, female, transgender or transsexual, and regardless of religion, nationality, ethnic heritage, political convictions, athletic skills, physical capabilities, age or physical condition.

SPORTS AND CULTURE
With a total of 34 athletic disciplines, Gay Games VIII covers a wide-ranging program that is sure to include a sport for you. Whether it’s a team effort, such as Soccer or Volleyball, or an individual/pairs event, such as Badminton, Swimming or Table Tennis – from Inline Speed Skating to Golf and Chess, there’s something here for everyone.

“Be part of it!” is not just our motto, it’s an invitation to everyone. Anyone can be part of the Gay Games. There are no qualification criteria. Even if you’re just a beginner in your sport, you are more than welcome to participate! Many disciplines are classified by age or ability so even beginners can compete against their peers.
The cultural events are expected to draw some 2000 participants to Cologne – singers, musicians, and visual artists, as well as dancers and cheerleaders. The Gay Games Village comprises a series of stages located in various parts of the of town centre. Choruses, bands, and cheerleading squads will perform both here and in other venues to ensure that both residents and visitors to Cologne experience the “Gay Games feeling.” The visual arts event at the VIII Gay Games Cologne 2010 will be an impressive exhibit, and the International Rainbow Memorial Run will commemorate the victims of HIV-AIDS and breast cancer.

Message to potential Chinese participants in Gay Games VIII

Same-sex ballroom dancing on TV?

Just a reminder that same-sex DanceSport (as well as same-sex Figure Skating and Bodybuilding pairs) has always been part of the Gay Games, and will be offered at Gay Games VIII next summer.

You may remember an episode of last year's So You think You Can Dance in which two male ballroom dancers auditioned together. Producer and Judge Nigel Lythgoe angered many people with his remarks.

Lythgoe Said Lythgoe: "I think you'd probably alienate a lot of our audience. We've always had the guys dance together on the show but they've never really done it in each other's arms before. I'm really one of those people that like to see guys be guys and girls be girls on stage. I don't think I liked it, to be frank."

He later fueled the anger with a Twitter defense of his dislike of "Brokeback Ballroom". And eventually, was issued an apology after being hammered on blogs and receiving some words from GLAAD.

Last night, another same-sex ballroom couple, Willem DeVries and Jacob Jason, auditioned.

Lythgoe treads carefully this year: "Thank you for showing me that same-sex ballroom dancing can be very strong, and very good."

FGG Co-President speaks to Windy City Times on Gay Games VIII and IX

WCT talks with Kurt Dahl, the Federation of Gay Games male Co-President, about the 2010 Games in Cologne, Germany (above).

There was, initially, interest from 14 cities to host the 2014 Gay Games. Four of them actually expressed interest in sending in letters of intent to bid, and three did: Cleveland, Boston and Washington, D.C.

The winner will be announced Sept. 29 in Cologne, site of the 2010 Games.

The Federation of Gay Games ( FGG ) received three very strong bids, according to Kurt Dahl, the FGG male co-president and vice president of host relations. "The voters will determine which bid is best for the Gay Games movement," he said. Each FGG board member has one vote and each full member organization of the general assembly has two votes. The winning city is scheduled to be announced at 6:30 p.m. Cologne time.

Gay Games Ambassador takes gold at World Deadlift Championships

Chris Morgan, the current Gay Games Powerlifting champion, has won Gold at the World Deadlift Championships.

He was lifting in the World Championship Single Event competition, held in Bradford in England, and made lifts of 200 kg followed by 230 kg and then 250 kg to clinch the World Open title in the 82.5 kilo class. Chris also finished second overall amongst 120 lifters, narrowly missing out on the ‘best lifter’ award that is presented across all weight classes

Speaking about the competition, Chris said, "I’m absolutely delighted to have won my second World Open Championship. I’m surprised by this result after my injury problems earlier this year, but now extremely encouraged by my recent form and results. The World Deadlift championship has always been a title that I’ve coveted, and to win it in my home country makes everything so extra special. I’d like to thank my family, friends and supporters for all their encouragement this year and especially the Federation of Gay Games for the continued inspiration."

"My next competition is the World Drug Free Powerlifting Championship being held in Milton Keynes, England in November and then South West Divisional Championship in Newquay, England in early December. I’m also looking forward to the Gay Games, which are taking place in the beautiful city of Cologne from 31 July to 7 August of next year."

Congrats to Kate Rowe!

In the ITU World Championship Grand Final Gold Coast triathlon, Kate Rowe, Federation of Gay Games VP for External Relations, took fourth place in her age group.

Her stats for this race were: 2.32.26 total time, 32.05 swim, 1.08.55 bike, 46.26 run: a personal best by 11 minutes !

Paris - 1st Sports Forum organised by FSGL

The first "Forum FSGL" will take place Sunday, 13 September, in Paris at the Espace des Blancs Manteaux, graciously offered by the Mayor of the IVth Arrondissement for this new event. More than 20 member clubs of the Fédération sportive gaie et lesbienne will present their activities to the public, with many clubs offering demonstrations of their sport. The event will open with a panel discussion of sports and homophobia, organized by former FGG Treasurer Manuel Picaud, and including sociologist Philippe Liotard, whose university hosted the 2006 FGG Annual Meeting.

FGG thanks to FSGL for offering a stand to promote participation in Gay Games VIII. Forum visitors will be able to take advantage of a special 10 euro discount offered by Games Cologne.

New Survey: Homophobia and Transphobia in Sports

Last year we reported about a fantastic "Out" track team member that attended Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. His name is Jamal Brown. We congratulated him for his very personal story told on http://www.outsports.com/ web site. Jamal wrote back this week and asked the Federation of Gay Games to help him with a sports survey.

Jamal is working for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) as a Senior Legal Assistant. His current project is setting its sights on challenging homophobia and transphobia in sports. To determine how it can best do that, GLAD is researching the ways in which anti-gay and anti-transgender attitudes affect LGBT athletes and coaches. Its first step is collecting the stories of LGBT athletes, coaches and allies who can shed light on the challenges and barriers homophobia and transphobia present. Please take a moment to participate in this important work by sharing your story in the brief survey in the link below.

USD 10,000 donation to Team headed to Cologne Gay Games

Three weeks to FGG Annual Meeting and Gay Games IX Site Selection!

The FGG Annual Meeting will open on 27 September in the beautiful city of Cologne, where our friends from Games Cologne, host of Gay Games VIII from 31 July to 7 August 2010 await us.

The meeting will take place at the Wolkenburg event center.

In addition to the regular business and elections that take place every year during our Annual Meeting, this meeting will include presentations from our host for Gay Games VIII, visits to the venues for next summer's Gay Games, and perhaps most excitingly of all, selection by the FGG General Assembly of the host of Gay Games IX from among three great candidates: Boston, Cleveland, and Washington, DC.

Follow-up to Copenhagen Conference "The Future of LGBT Sport & Culture"

Following the Copenhagen Conference on "The Future of LGBT Sport and Culture" held on Monday, 27 July, we wanted to update you on the follow-up and actions that have been on-going since.

1. A preliminary summary of the conference appears at the end of this message.

2. FGG and GLISA are currently engaged in dialogue to determine how best to respond to the community's request for one quadrennial international sport and culture event, with a human rights component.

3. On Thursday, 27 August, the Co-Presidents of FGG (Emy Ritt & Kurt Dahl) and GLISA (Julia Applegate & Wessel van Kampen) met via teleconference.

4. On Saturday, 29 August, Emy Ritt and Wessel van Kampen met in Brussels to continue the discussions. The results of these discussions will be communicated and the community will be asked for its feedback, comments, and suggestions.

5. Community members, sport and culture organisations, and any interested parties are invited to meet in Cologne on Friday, 2 October, 9:30 - 12:30. For those not able to be in Cologne, the dialogue will be frequent and welcome. All interested parties will have an opportunity to express their views.

COPENHAGEN CONFERENCE - preliminary Summary: "The Future of LGBT Sport & Culture", Monday, 27 July 2009

1. Following a very gracious invitation from Outgames 2009, on Monday, 27 July, 30 participants attended the FGG Session on "The Future of LGBT Sport and Culture" from Berlin and Frankfort, Paris, Amsterdam, Australia, Philippines, Jamaica, and Brazil, as well as Houston, Ohio, North America. Representatives from GLISA also attended, including Julia Applegate, Co-President.

2. Team Berlin presented a written statement and a petition 15 meters long (50 feet) signed by those who would like to see one quadrennial event in the future.

3. A T-Shirt from a Netherlands swimming club was displayed to demonstrate their perspective: on front of tshirt - Copenhagen / Cologne 2009-2010.

4. The OFFICIAL proceedings of the conference will be made available as soon as possible.

5. There seemed to be general consensus on having one international sport and culture event every 4 years, with a human rights conference component, and with regional events in the intervening years.

6. There were no concrete suggestions as to exact structure or organisation.

7. There is strong interest in seeing a continued and frequent dialogue with the community and between FGG and GLISA. Without a frequent dialogue, the momentum will be lost. There is very strong interest and recommendations to keep the dialogue going and produce some tangible results, with FGG and GLISA in dialogue. The participants feel that they have done all that they can by delivering their messages and attending the meetings - they feel that it is now up to FGG and GLISA to engage in dialogue.

8. The participants requested a schedule of discussions. EGLSF proposed that a potential date on the "schedule" could be in March 2010 in Manchester , UK , at their 2010 AGA. We also mentioned that there will be opportunities for dialogue between meetings and leading up to GGVIII Gay Games. FGG and GLISA are in contact to continue the dialogue.

9. Participants also requested that they be informed and updated in a transparent fashion about any discussions and issues, including any issues that may block progress.

To determine how it can best do that, GLAD is researching the ways in which anti-gay and anti-transgender attitudes affect LGBT athletes and coaches. Its first step is collecting the stories of LGBT athletes, coaches and allies who can shed light on the challenges and barriers homophobia and transphobia present.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo supports marriage equality

How could our society grant more rights to a heterosexual, one-night-stand wedding in Vegas than a gay couple that has been together for 3, 5, 10 years of true love?"
