Grand Rapids, Michigan, bowlers medal in Cologne

From PrideSource:

Several gay bowlers from the Grand Rapids area - (pictured here, left to right) Tim Lowing, Jeremy Brown, Earl Haney, Gene Artman, Rick Wright and Jim Lahnala - competed in this year's Gay Games, held in August in Cologne, Germany. Both Haney and Artman won bronze medals in the team event, Division B, while Brown won the bronze in singles bowling, Division A.

Artman, who also competed in the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago, said the event was an important global representation of Michigan gay athletes.

"It's important that we represent our state, and while our group was small compared to, say Team San Francisco, we hope that we have laid a positive foundation that will hopefully encourage not only participation in future Gay Games, but see an increase in gay sporting events in Michigan itself," Artman said. "We know there are many gay athletes in the state, but very few gay sporting organizations for them to join. It is our hope that perhaps that will change for the better over the next few years."
