New Cleveland aquarium to open in January

From Ohio.com:

CLEVELAND: A little bit of Key West with its mangrove swamps is coming to Northeast Ohio. A touch of the Amazon will be added with piranhas, known for their razor-sharp teeth and appetite for meat. There will also be live corals, thanks to a Summit County man. And a heavy dose of aquatic life from North American coastal waters.

You will also find giant sea horses, alligators, catfish, snakes and octopuses from around the globe among the more than 5,000 mostly watery creatures representing more than 100 species on hand.

Welcome to the new Greater Cleveland Aquarium. The $33 million facility is scheduled to open Jan. 21 in the FirstEnergy Powerhouse on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland’s Flats entertainment area. It is being developed by a New Zealand company Marinescape and Jacobs Entertainment Inc. The aquarium, still under construction, is the New Zealand company’s 23rd aquarium that it has designed and built. It will be its first in North America with all of its other facilities in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The first fish for the aquarium arrived on Dec. 21 and additional shipments are expected in the coming weeks. The biggest feature in the new aquarium is a 500,000-gallon saltwater tank filled with 15 sharks, plus rays and eels. The tank is 10 feet high and up to 70 feet long.
