Even if you don’t follow sports or politics—or weren’t even born in the ’70s—you’ve probably heard David Kopay’s name. And there is a reason for that. He is, by almost all accounts, the single most important figure in gay sports history. An all-American running back at the University of Washington in 1964, he later signed with the San Francisco 49ers, playing with them for nine years and earning a reputation as one of the toughest players in the NFL at the time.
