Volleyball values in San Francisco

Reprinted from the 5 July 2012 issue of the Bay Area Reporter
By Roger Brigham

There was plenty of competition on hand the weekend of 30 June - 1 July when the "Red, White, and Blue Ball" volleyball tournament returned to San Francisco, but the collective focus on the players was much more on being rights than bragging rights.

Thirty-two teams with a total of 235 players squared off at City College of San Francisco for the two-day tournament. The experience level ranged from veterans who have been playing almost their entire lives to folks just venturing out into the world of sports.

A year ago, Travis Teeters was cooling his heels in the closet while finishing his service in the U.S. Air Force in Colorado. Saturday, he was coming up with key blocks and spikes at the net to help his Chika Lange go on a late 7-1 run to rally for a round-robin victory.

Not bad for a first-year player.

"I found a group of guys who were playing, and I just really enjoy everything about playing the game," Teeters, 25, said. "I've only been competing for one year."

Teeters said he and his teammates compete in other tournaments in cities such as Sacramento, Las Vegas, San Jose, and Santa Barbara, but appreciated the return last season of the San Francisco tournament, which had stopped being played about a decade ago.

"I just wanted to bring it back to San Francisco, since we have so many gay volleyball players here," said tournament director Jonny Sloan. "Once I found the gym space, it came together pretty easily."

Sloan, 30, said he has been playing since he was 19 years old. The gymnasium at CCSF resonated with the steady tap-tap-thwack, tap-tap-thwack of players digging out the ball, then setting it up for kill shots. He said there was something about the dynamic of the six-player sides that made it psychologically addictive.

"You're working with five other people all of the time," he said. "You have to do it together as one unit. I think of it as being like fighter pilots: if one player's in trouble, the others close in to help out. If they don't, the other side will take them apart."

Teeters started playing softball last year as a left center outfielder and enjoys that as well, but said he liked the continuous athletic engagement in volleyball even more.

"Sometimes in softball in the outfield, if the ball's not hit to you, you don't have a lot to do," Teeters said. "In volleyball, you're always moving and rotating on every play."

The sense of family and community is clear even with the most cursory of looks around the tournament courts. High-fives and congrats are exchanged on every try, and players laugh off their mistakes with looks of chagrin and determination to do better next time.

That community bonding is an important aspect for Michael Streby, who said he was kicked out of his Indiana home when he came out of the closet at the age of 18. He's patched things up with his family since then, but doesn't take the on-court family for granted.

"You really depend on each other," he said. "You do well as a team or badly as a team. You don't do it all on your own."

Streby, 32, who moved to the Bay Area last October, spent his time at the tournament officiating when he wasn't playing for his Balls of Fire squad. He said he's played volleyball almost all of his life and having gay leagues in San Francisco was invaluable.

"I think gay sports are very important for gay people," Streby said. "It's a great way to meet friends outside of the Castro bars. It's an activity that isn't based on alcohol or sex. Nobody is judging you."

The tournament was the North American Gay Volleyball season opener and offered three competition divisions based on skill level. San Francisco Thai Ice Tea won the A Division, followed by Bay Area For The Ladies and Just Bring Mixers. In the BB Division, Cal-Me Gazelas was first, Los Angeles Rough Riders second, and Sacramento Black Sheep third. San Jose Maniguis was first in the B Division, San Francisco China Lang! second, and USA Spikeaholics third.

For anyone interested in getting involved in local gay volleyball, playdrop intermediate to advanced drop-in volleyball is played at Eureka Valley Recreation Center on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

US Sit Volleyball team at Times Square

A story submitted by Dianne Tinelli. New York, New York to Women's Sporting News, reminds us that inclusive sport is good for everyone:

I have to share my favorite lunch hour with the world. First of all, I’d like to thank Women’s Sporting News, @WSN247, for informing me that there was a 100 Days Celebration in Times Square for the Summer Olympics.

I walked to the event today at lunchtime and as soon as I integrated with the crowd on Broadway, I saw the U.S. Women’s Paralympic Sit Volleyball Team. I walked to the front, heard a man ask who’d like to participate and quickly raised my hand. He chose me and I practically ran through the crowd to get on the platform. The Paralympians waved me over to the other side of the net. I practically dropped my camera and papers I was carrying on to the sideline and sat down. They all said hi with big smiles on their faces. I had a permanent smile from then on.

I was on the blue team with teammates Monique Burkland, Nichole Millage, Katie Holloway, Nicky Nieves and a little boy named Henry. Did I just call these amazing athletes teammates? Wow! We were facing the red team of Brenda Maymon, Army vet Kari Miller, Heather Erickson, Lora Webster and two lucky participants, like me. They told us to make sure not to lift our butt off the ground. My first serve didn’t make it over the net, but they told me to serve again. I didn’t realize without my legs, I needed to really pound the ball. So, I punched it and served an ace! OK, so I hit it in front of the non-athlete. On the next serve I aimed for a real athlete and we volleyed a few times and scored again. We won the game 15 to I don’t know what. Does it really matter? I PLAYED SIT VOLLEYBALL WITH THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL ATHLETES I’VE EVER MET. They gave me high-fives, compliments and of course, their smiles. They THANKED ME for playing! I thanked them and wished them luck. I didn’t want to get off the platform. I was in complete amazement.

Afterward, they played amongst themselves, then put their prosthetic limbs on and lined up near the Road to London bus for autographs. Of course, I had to get on the line to get their autographs. When I got there, some of them thanked me again for playing with them. They signed autographs and I took pictures of them before leaving. My day was made. No-one or nothing was going to bother me after that very inspirational moment I was so fortunate to share with the U.S. Women’s Paralympic Sit Volleyball Team - my new heroes. Of course, I will never forget it or them. I can’t wait to watch them compete this summer. I floated back to work after a few tweets and phone calls.Thank you again WSN for always keeping me in the know!

On athletes' partners...

Wally Salinger of Team Sydney's Freezone volleyball club has written a charming message about and to the partners of club members:

Scattered around the gym are little comfortable havens. Places where the gay versions of “The Ugly Parent” sit

Not to be outdone by their hetero role models, these partners, children or still-here-after-last-night don’t provide sporting commentary. Rather they discuss the more pressing issues relating to the people on the court.

Organisers and referees cop flak, as do those who take themselves and their sport just a little too seriously.

[...]

Today’s column is dedicated to the partners who support players across this country. Without you, many athletes would not be playing their sport, feeling it was taking away from their relationship rather than an essential part of it.

Build a stronger relationship — support your partner’s sporting efforts at one of the member clubs.

Nick Clark writes on ECA of his new life as an out coach

On the blog of the Equality Coaching Alliance, an FGG initiative coordinated by Roger Brigham, Nick Clark has written an update on his new life as an out coach:

I am just a little past the midway point of my first season as an "out" coach. It has been largely gratifying with few, if any, hiccups. I was hired in May of 2011; a month or so after an article was written about me on outsports.com. I am so happy and thankful for the article. I was inspired by those who had articles written about them and I saw how much it helped me and I wanted to help others in return. I received many emails from people all over the country. All were positive. They shared their own lives with me. Some were out and others were still closeted. Some were athletes and others were just sports fans.

I have had such great reception from both the men and women's volleyball teams. I was in a team meeting with the guys in late August when the students were returning to campus. It was important to me that I share with them my homosexuality from the start. I wanted to share that part of me and begin building trust. I didn’t want to go back into the closet and not share my life with them. I was incredibly nervous and my heart was racing. It was well received and they really didn't comment all that much. Some of them had a stunned look on their face, while others already knew because they read the article. Within the next few days I was approached by some of the guys and they gave me their support and let me know that they "have my back". It was a major relief. I could do what I came here to do. Coach.

A young athlete comes out... and what happened next

A while ago Outsports posted this first-person coming out story from a young volleyball player:

Three dates will forever be ingrained in my mind: July 17th, 2009, the day I came out to my sister and a group of 50 (almost) random strangers. April 22nd, 2010, the day I came out to my parents with the help of my sister and introduced them to my first boyfriend. And, most recently, Aug. 26th, 2011, the day I came out publicly. These three dates signify part of who I am. Being gay is only part of me – I am also a volleyball player, a student, a son, a friend and so much more.

I first started to understand that I was different when I was 10 years old, in fifth grade, when I had my first introduction to health. Sitting at those wooden tables watching a video on puberty and health, all I could wonder about was how the other guys in the room felt about the subject of girls and guys. I wasn’t sure whether I was the only one not thinking about girls.

Outsports has just posted a follow up, in the form of a letter from Galen's father:

Outsports.com posted a story by my son, Galen Dodd, about his experiences of coming out to his friends, family and volleyball teammates. You noted that Galen, at 15, was probably the youngest contributor who had submitted a coming out story to your publication.

I just wanted to tell you about some of the responses to his story we have all gotten this week. And the good news is the responses have been unanimously positive.

Outsports publishes coming out story of young volleyball player

Outsports has published another great coming out story, this time from a high school volleyball player:

Infos ICI.

Follow up on Vôlei Futuro player: opposing club fined for homophobic abuse of its fans

Thanks to Outsports for posting this news from Sports Illustrated:

SAO PAULO (AP) - A Brazilian sports tribunal has fined a men's volleyball team about $30,000 because its fans taunted a player with homophobic chants during a match.

The tribunal fined Cruzeiro on Wednesday because of chants made by supporters during a match against Volei Futuro on April 2 in the city of Contagem.

Volei Futuro player Michael, who is gay, complained after he was taunted throughout the match. At times, the entire gymnasium was chanting against him.

Several groups [including our friends at CDG Brasil] came to Michael's defense and the fans' actions became a topic in Brazilian media.

In the following matches, fans honored Michael and held demonstrations against homophobia.

Fans show support for gay Brazilian volleyball player

Vôlei Futuro, the club of Brazilian volleyball player Michael Souza, showed their support after his return to the court after receiving homophobic abuse from an opposing team in a recent match. Following that match, Michael came out. In this latest match, fans waved pink balloons bearing Michael's name, and displayed a banner saying: "Vôlei Futuro against prejudice" and tshirts with the message: "Prejudice is the worst violence".

Bravo to Michael, and bravo to the fans of his club!

Thanks to our friends from CDG Brasil for keeping us informed on this story!

Follw-up on Brazilian volleyball player, victim of homophobic abuse

We wrote earlier this week about Michael Souza, a Brazilian volleyball player who received homophobic abuse on the court during a recent match. We recommend this follow-up story from Volleywood.net (not dot com as we first wrote).
