Matthew Mitcham performs well in Commonwealth Games trials

The Commonwealth Games will be taking place in New Delhi this October.

This report from Diving Australia on the performance of Friend of the FGG Matt Mitcham at Australian diving trials for Delhi 2010:

Beijing Olympic Gold medallist Matthew Mitcham got his Commonwealth Games selection off to a great start with a flawless exhibition of precision diving in the 1m springboard event. Mitcham (NSW) won both the preliminary and final to blitz the field with a combined total of 908.10, well ahead of second placed Scott Robertson (NSW) with a combined score of 824.50. In third place was Grant Nel (VIC), 787.10, followed by Thomas Rickards (NSW) 682.65.

Only 1 pair of men and women contested the 10m synchronised events, after the late withdrawal of Alexandra Croak (NSW) with a back injury, denying her partner Melissa Wu the opportunity to dive in this event.

The men’s pairing of Matthew Mitcham (NSW) and Ethan Warren (QLD) scored 411.48

Speaking after today’s events, Mitcham said “I was really pleased to get off to a confident start and I’m very pleased with these 2 results. It sets me up well for the next 2 days of competition and my favourite 10m event [which he would go on to win]”.
