Libération: fail

While Equipe France was fortunate to receive very good coverage from the LGBT press, mainstream press was a total failure. In fact, the only coverage of Gay Games VIII by a national daily paper was this photo in Libération, a left-of-center daily. The caption says:

The eighth Gay Games (homosexual games) began Monday in Cologne with a parade led by male majorettes. This "compétition" will bring together 10,000 gays and lesbians in 35 disciplines.

Gay Games VIII began on Saturday evening, not Monday. There was no parade. The photo appears to be of a cheerleader at Neumarkt village, not of any parade.

Beyond these material errors, we have to wonder why the only coverage of this event was a single photo. And why a photo of cheerleading, which is a great activity, but not one of the 35 sports mentioned. And why this particular photo of a cheerleader. And why, oh why, those quotation marks around "competition".

For Libération, a major fail.
