A look back at Rikki Streicher's SF bars
A bit of historical writing on Rikki Streicher, a found of the Gay Games and a winner of the Tom Waddell Award.
Lesbian life in San Francisco wouldn’t be the same without Amelia’s or Maud’s bars, where women once flocked to find community and more for nearly a quarter of a century, echoed many women recalling the heady days of San Francisco’s lesbian culture and nightlife.
It was all because of the nightclubs’ owner the late Rikki Streicher who dug her roots into the bedrock of San Francisco, stretched her influence throughout the community, and flourished for nearly a quarter century. Streicher died in 1994, but not without making a profound impact with her historic bars and passion for women in sports and community.
Streicher backed many women’s sports leagues, especially the Gay Softball League, and co-organizing the Gay Games in San Francisco before co-founding the Federation of Gay Games. She also hobnobbed with community and political leaders and pushing for progress for the LGBT community.
