Gay Games-inspired play at San Francisco State University

Last night at San Francisco State University a new Gay Games VIII-inspired play entitled 8 was performed.

As described by playwright James Warren Boyd:

In 8 I share my experiences training and competing in track and field at last summer’s Gay Games in Cologne. Woven into this narrative are my creative non-fiction works performed by actors, interconnecting monologues juxtaposing life experiences from a teenager dancing inside a snowman costume to a man in mid-life coping with loss of a parent. In my storytelling I hope to connect the present to the past and speak to the universality of the human experience.

Written by: James Warren Boyd
Directed by: Dr. Amy K. Kilgard and Jennifer Daly
Performers: James Warren Boyd, Patrick Barresi, Allen Conkle, Doug Mungin, Chel Svendsgaard
Lighting, Sound, Tech: Jennifer Daly
Academic Committee: Dr. Mercilee Jenkins, Dr. Amy Kilgard

FGG Board Member Gene Dermody attended the performance:

Wow! Writing as a competitive veteran of now all eight Gay Games, this group's performance has captured the spirit and meaning of the Gay Games Mission for our community using satire, comedy, and intense personal passion and emotion. I wish more people could see the common humanity in Tom Waddell's Particpation, Inclusion, and Personal Best.

We hope to have more about this play soon.
