QX Magazine's Sport Special: Ben Cohen interview

QX is a free UK gay weekly magazine. Their latest issue, which you can download HERE, is devoted to sports. We're publishing some excerpts to give you an idea of what you'll find in this interesting issue.

First, the top story, an interview with rugby player Ben Cohen:

HIGH SCORING RUGBY UNION international Ben Cohen now has a
high profile as a gay icon. He was the Gay Times Sports Personality of the Year
2008, an Attitude cover boy in 2009, and last year he supported GMFA’s Gay
Sports Day. Now he wants you to come and have a beer at The 2 Brewers so he
can tell you more about his campaign against homophobic bullying...

In the past two or three years you’ve become something of a gay icon. You’re an underwear model, you’ve auctioned your jockstrap at the RVT. How did it all come about?
To be honest with you it’s something that’s been going for about five or six years. There’s this guy called Laurent in Paris who started up a fan page on Facebook and in the last couple of years it really took off. I don’t really see myself as a gay icon but I realise I have this huge following and it’s growing every day. We heard these stories about people getting bullied over their sexual preference and wanting to commit suicide. I’m comfortable with my sexuality. I’m married and I’ve got kids. But I thought if I can help out in any way, I’m in a position where I can air my opinion and it’ll get a lot of listeners. We’re trying to support people who are being bullied and to get people who’ve been bullied to stand up against it.

Gay rugby club The Kings Cross Steelers hosts Beer with Ben at The 2 Brewers, 114
Clapham High Street, London SW4, from 7.30pm on Wednesday 20th April
