ALTOONA, Pa., April 5 -- Pennsylvania State University at Altoona issued the following news release:

Penn State Altoona will present speaker Brian Sims and his presentation titled "LGBT Athletes and Allies" on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 6 p.m. in rooms 101-103 of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts.

In 2000, Brian Sims was the captain of the Bloomsburg University football team in northeast Pennsylvania. Following the greatest season in the Division II school's history, he did the unthinkable: he came out of the closet. In doing so, the regional All-American and team captain became the only openly gay college football captain in NCAA history and one of the most notable college players to ever come out. Today, Sims is the president of the board of directors of Equality Pennsylvania and the chairman of the Gay and Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia. A member of the National Campaign Board of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, the Philadelphia policy attorney lectures regularly about the policy and legal challenges facing the LGBT civil rights movement and travels to universities and colleges to speak about his college football experience.
