Downtown Soccer Toronto to support the Justin Campaign

June 29, 2010, Toronto – The membership of Downtown Soccer Toronto (DST) has chosen The Justin Campaign to be the charity recipient of partial proceeds of their 2010/2011 fund raising calendar.

The calendar, which relied solely on volunteer models, photographers, and designers from the league and league allies, is a new strategy in fund raising for the league. "Our surveys indicated that members wanted new ways to contribute to the league, and that integrating a charity component to our fund raising was desirable," says Events and Sponsorship Coordinator Shane Butner. "By producing a calendar, we could implement both suggestions and highlight the unique diversity of our league."

Members were asked to submit nominations for possible charitable recipients which the Executive edited into a short list. Members were then polled, and the Brighton-based organization The Justin Campaign was selected. Named after out gay footballer Justin Fashanu, The Justin Campaign seeks to challenge homophobia in football (soccer). "Obviously this is a great fit for our league," explains Communications Officer Keph Senett. "Downtown Soccer Toronto is committed to providing an inclusive space for everybody to play soccer. The goals of The Justin Campaign are aligned with ours."

Two dollars ($2.00) from the sale of every calendar will go towards The Justin Campaign. Calendars can be purchased at the Downtown Soccer Toronto Pride booth for twenty dollars ($20.00) each.

On February 19, 2010, The Justin Campaign launched the Football v. Homophobia Initiative, an international day opposing homophobia in football (soccer). They intend to make this an annual event. Downtown Soccer Toronto is Toronto’s first official gay, lesbian, bi, trans, queer and queer-friendly summer co-ed recreational soccer league, aimed at providing an athletic and socially safe atmosphere for everyone to enjoy playing soccer.
